Dumpster Rental in Chicago: Real Prices, Weight Limits & Fees (2026)

Updated Oct 21, 2026. Ranges below are national cost-data ranges (Angi / Thumbtack, 2025–2026) that Chicago haulers price inside of; we are verifying hauler-by-hauler Chicago quotes and will replace ranges with named, dated quotes as they land.

What you should expect to pay

SizeTypical all-in rangeBest forWatch out
10-yard$294–$480Garage / basement cleanout, small bathroomSmall included tonnage β€” heavy debris overruns it fast
20-yard$350–$564Most remodels, medium cleanouts β€” the most-rented sizeThe size in most overage complaints: quoted ~$439, billed thousands extra in weight
30-yard$400–$800Large remodels, estate cleanoutsOften cheaper per ton than a 20-yard for heavy jobs
40-yard / roll-off$280–$1,550 (wide range)Construction, commercialConfirm it's priced per-haul vs. per-period before signing

General benchmark: an average dumpster rental runs about $386, a typical roll-off week about $650. If a Chicago quote is far below these numbers, the difference usually shows up later as weight overages.

STOP
Scam warning: Fake dumpster ads on Facebook and Instagram offer $150–$200 rentals and ask for a deposit by Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo. No dumpster arrives and the money is unrecoverable. A real hauler takes a card through a real checkout and gives you a written quote with an address and a phone number that answers.

Chicago-specific: permits

A dumpster on your own driveway or private property generally needs no city permit. A dumpster placed on a street, alley, or other public way in Chicago does require a permit β€” ask your hauler who is pulling it and get the permit number before delivery, because the ticket risk lands on the property. (Our dedicated Chicago permit guide is coming soon and will cite the current city rules.)

Chicago hauler directory

Status: being verified now. We are confirming, hauler by hauler: real local operator vs. broker, flat price by size, included tons, rental days, and overage rate. Listings go live only with those fields filled β€” a directory that guesses prices is the problem we're replacing. Haulers: your listing is free; claim it to get your real numbers in first.

The 60-second booking checklist

  1. Written quote: all-in price, size, included tons, included days.
  2. Overage rate per ton, in writing, plus a promise of the certified weight ticket.
  3. "Are you the hauler, or a broker?" β€” brokers aren't always bad, undisclosed ones are.
  4. Prohibited-items list for your debris type (concrete/dirt/roofing = weigh it first).
  5. Card payment, real address, permit number if it's going on the street.
